The Xtension 9 is an ideal solution for anyone who is looking for the exceptional sound quality of a high-end turntable, but with a more compact foot-print.

Benefiting from decades of turntable design experience, the Xtension 9's structure uses a combination of the popular 'mass-loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principles. Most high-end designs tend to employ one of these principles, but the Xtension 9 uses both. It does this by placing the high-mass, anti-resonant main chassis on three powerful magnetic feet, effectively "floating" the turntable above the stand on which it sits.

The precision-balanced platter used on the Xtension 9 is made from a purpose-chosen metal alloy, which has then been internally lined with a Thermo-Plastic Elastomer (TPE) compound. The top of the platter is finished with recycled vinyl records, which acts as the perfect playback platform for the playing record - without the need for an extra mat. The result is a resonance-free platter, which runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball-bearing thanks to some added magnetic isolation.

Operation of the Xtension 9 is made effortlessly simple by the integrated speed control. Providing a clean, regulated power signal to the high-grade motor, the built-in speed control allows for easy switching between 33 and 45RPM speeds.

The Xtension 9 SuperPack is sold with Pro-Ject's popular 9CC Evolution tonearm pre-installed. The 9” tonearm boasts a one-piece conical carbon fibre tube, TPE-damped counterweights and an inverted bearing design that allows for perfect tracking and minimal resonance, even with demanding pick-up cartridges. In the SuperPack version, the tonearm is supplied finished with a Pick-IT DS2 MC moving coil cartridge. The Pick-IT DS2 MC, developed in partnership with Ortofon, combines Pro-Ject's vast experience with phenomenal sound and high-quality materials, with all of Ortofon's advanced knowledge of micro-technologies, to deliver a sound performance that puts others to shame.

For added convenience, the Xtension 9 SuperPack is supplied with a removable dust cover, a heavy record puck for improved record hold and a high-quality 5P-RCA output cable.

*Please note*
The Xtension 9 Superpack was originally supplied with an Ortofon Quintet Black S cartridge, as of October 2021 the Xtension 9 Superpack is supplied fitted with Pro-Ject's own Pick-IT DS2 MC cartridge.

True Balanced Connections

The interconnect cable between a record player and a phono stage is prone to pick up noise on the way. That noise and interference can stem from a lot of unavoidable sources, such as household applicances, wi-fi and bluetooth devices, other power cables and audio amplifiers. Unshielded (i.e. RCA) interconnects can amplify the picked-up noise and make it audible through your speakers, interfering with the pure musical signal.

Balanced (typically XLR) cable connections double the wires carrying the musical signal – with one side inverted. In this case noise still gets picked up by both wires, but with one side reversed. When the signals are re-joined at the phono stage, the picked-up noise is cancelled out by the opposing signals. The benefit of this is a louder, cleaner musical signal that has doubled in size with almost no remaining noise.

Hi-Fi News Review the Xtension 9 Turntable

"“I was pleased to hear that the Xtension 9 Evolution Super Pack exhibits that certain indefinable sonic ‘rightness’ that generally characterises the upper reaches of the Pro-Ject range for me.""

Beautiful System - Pro-Ject

"The construction is a pleasing combination of immensely solid overall build that is then finished with some lovely and extremely high quality flourishes like the elegant speaker terminals and flawless piano lacquer that complements the equally wonderful job done by Pro-Ject on the Xtension."

Xtension model turntables take a step into the realm of 'stability through mass' as well as having magnetically decoupled feet. This makes Xtension TTs fairly unique in the High-End HiFi world. It is quite a task setting them up, something that an audiophile will relish, and once done you are rewarded greatly for your hard work. Sitting back and settling into your favourite album while basking in the monument-esc beauty of the turntable itself is an experience I'd recommend to anyone.

  • Pro-Ject Audio Systems are masters of the analogue format. Their extensive range of turntables covers every use-case and budget, and most are sold as complete solutions with a pick-up cartridge readily installed. However, when you get to higher end designs, there is often not a pre-installed cartridge - as the choice of pick-up becomes ever-more personal.

To help in this situation, Henley Audio, as distributors for both Pro-Ject Audio Systems and Ortofon, can offer cartridge bundle and installation services that sees your high-end turntable sent ready to set-up and spin with your own choice of cartridge pre-installed.

Details of the cartridges we offer as part of this service can be found at the top of this page within 'promotions', but it covers premium Moving Coil options from Pro-Ject Audio Systems and the Ortofon Cadenza Series. For latest info or to discuss your requirements, Contact Us or speak with your local Pro-Ject Reference Partner dealer. If you choose to purchase a bundle cartridge and have your dealer fit it, or fit it yourself, the cartridge will be supplied securely and safely with the turntable, but not with normal retail packaging.

All cartridges installed at Henley Audio will be treated with the utmost care and attention and fitted by a skilled and experienced member of our team. The turntable it's being installed on will also be set-up for a brief test, to confirm compatibility. All Henley Audio installed systems will have a certificate of authenticity enclosed, for added confidence when you get the turntable home. There is a £25.00 +VAT charge to have a Henley Audio engineer install your cartridge, and there may be a minor delay to despatching your turntable as a result.

Cartridges installed onto high-end turntables as part of a "bundle" deal are classified as BULK stock, which means they do not have full retail packaging and accessories. This is one of the ways we're able to offer such great discounts for you.
