Tube Box DS2
The Tube Box DS2 is an audiophile-grade phono pre-amplifier with a valve output stage. Taking over from the hugely successful Tube Box DS model, the DS2 expands on its predecessor’s ability both technically and aesthetically.

The sophisticated, dual-mono internal design benefits from the outstanding circuit technology developed by Dr. Sykora, and uses superlative components. Combined with the ultra-low noise specification and precise RIAA equalisation, the Tube Box DS2 is a meticulously designed device.

The Tube Box DS2 is compatible with both MM and MC cartridges, and is fully customisable for Gain and Capacitance settings, as well as boasting a continuously adjustable impedance dial – taken from the flagship Phono Box RS – that can be adjusted during playback. There is also a switchable subsonic filter, for greater room-matching abilities.

The Tube Box DS2 benefits from two selectable inputs and outputs, allowing vinyl aficionados to connect multiple turntables or tonearms to the input, and different amplifiers to the output. The Tube Box DS2 is a true vinyl lovers’ dream, allowing you to enjoy your records like never before.

Products that are Awaiting Stock are items that we would normally carry on stock at our Oxfordshire warehouse, but are currently unavailable. Chances are there is already more on the way, but if you would like a more accurate availability status please feel free to Contact Us.

Urgent order items are products that we do not normally carry on stock, but they are typically held on stock by our European suppliers. Depending on availability, we will seek to order these products quickly, when we have an enquiry. They can therefore be subject to quicker availability times than "Special Order" products.

Special Order items are those that are most often built to order. For these items, we tend to experience longer lead times as we negotiate them into the production line with our suppliers.

Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2 Review

"Above all, though, is the sublime valve-y sound: it’s an absolute knock-out, even proving itself in an uber high-end £100k system with a £10k MC. This is a killer."

The DS line is the mid-level series of electronics from Pro-Ject, and they perfectly compliment a large array of other hi-fi components from turntables to AV systems. This is in no small way due to the compact chassis and plethora of models available, meaning you can find a unit to fit your need and incorporate it unobtrusively into your system.

However, if you are looking to make more of a statement,  DS2  products and upward have optional magnetic wooden side panels, so you can customise your aesthetic and boast a neat, uniform look accross your hi-fi setup.

  • A phono stage takes the low-level electrical signal, generated by the pick-up cartridge on your turntable, and amplifies it to LINE level. When it's at LINE level, you can connect the outputs of your phono stage to any LINE or AUX input on your amplifier. If you do not have a phono stage, when you connect the turntable to your amplifier the signal will be very quiet, and if you turn it up to normal listening level it will sound distorted and noisy.

You do not need an external phono stage if...

    • There is a phono stage already built-in to your turntable (for instance with our Phono USB or RecordMaster turntables from Pro-Ject)
    • Your amplifier has a Phono input.

In both of these cases, the built-in phono stage needs to support your pick-up cartridge (see below).

  • Every Pro-Ject Audio Systems DS3 product is available in black and silver finishes with optional wooden side panels available separately. Whether you like a solid aluminium chassis, or you want to add the retro-styled wooden side panels, the available options allow each DS2 or DS3 product to fit perfectly into your environment.

  • Yes. You need to buy a phono stage that suits your particular type of cartridge. If you have a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge, you need an MM-compatible phono stage. If you have a Moving Coil (MC) cartridge, you need an MC-compatible phono stage. This is due to the different output levels of MM and MC cartridges (as MC cartridges are so quiet, they require more Gain).

  • Cartridges are complex micro-mechanical devices, and the way a phono stage treats the electrical signal they generate can dramatically impact the end sound quality. When setting adjustments are available, the one adjustment you always need to check, regardless of the cartridge, is Gain. The level of Gain directly affects all cartridges, as the ultimate task of a phono stage is to amplify the electrical signal.

After Gain, the type of Settings you need to adjust are dependent on the cartridge used...

    • For Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges, you need to adjust the capacitance (measured in pF).
    • For Moving Coil (MC) cartridges, you need to adjust the Impedance (measured in Ω).

Some phono stages have other Settings available, which are not cartridge dependent. For example...

    • Curve Selection (most phono stages are designed with RIAA equalisation in mind, but there are other options available - such as DECCA)
    • Sub-Sonic Filter (to attenuate the low-end out of a system where boom is a problem)
