"I’d simply suggest that anybody in the market for a turntable package in the sub-£1000 bracket should put the UKX on the audition shortlist. For the money being asked, I cannot think of a better source system – full stop."

Hi-Fi World, February 2014

Reviewed By: Tony Bolton
Rating: 5/5 Globes

Comments of Note:
“Vocals were well projected in their presence, and seemed to integrate well with the spread of sound around them.”
“Some of the more up tempo tracks have quite a substantial bass beat and I was pleased to note that this seemed quite well controlled.”
“...the three performers spread across the soundstage, with the guitars to the left and right, topped by the harmonising vocals, with John Stewart’s lead placed dead centre. The placement of each one was very solid, with none of the vagueness in the imaging that can occur with some decks at this price point.”
“The guitar sounds were distinct, the different resonances of each being well defined.”
“At this price point it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish small details such as the differing tonality of two examples of the same instrument, but playing this record through this deck I had no problem”
“I think the cartridge showed excellent tracking abilities when faced with some horrendously complex waveforms, and managed to not only track well, but produce sounds that were musically intelligible.”
“This UK first pressing is in very good shape, and the spread of sound in front of me was beautifully clear, full of energy and with a sense of space in both the presentation of the music and the grouping of the musicians in the mono sourced image in front of me.”
“a nicely finished and rather smart looking turntable that feels solid to handle, with positive feeling actions to the controls.”
“AGAINST: Nothing at this price”

“Starting off with Vivaldi’s Concerti Op. 6 performed by I Musici on Philips 9500 438, I find the 1 Xpression incredibly easy to listen to. The performance is rounded and crisp and the allegros are buoyant and sprightly.”
[Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana performed by the London Symphony Orchestra] “I am impressed that, even when the orchestra and chorus are letting rip in the first movement, the tinkling of the triangle is clearly heard in the background.”
“Clearly, the cartridge and tonearm are working in perfect harmony as there’s no trace of anything being masked.”
“the sound is well controlled and very musical. At this price point, Pro-Ject has a real winner on its hands.”
“great-value turntable that delivers super sound quality.”

Hi-Fi News, February 2014

Score: 81%, 'Outstanding Product'

Comments of Note:
“Don’t be fooled by this package’s modest price. This is a surprisingly capable little record player that is highly enjoyable to listen to, even in a revealing system, thanks to its fine speed stability and highly communicative music making.”
“the deck delivering a creditably stable and powerful sound even when tasked with tracking challenging cuts.”
“Bass notes stopped and started with more precision, revealing more of the tonal texture of bass instruments and providing better differentiation between low bass guitar notes and kick-drums.”
“With really dynamic LPs, such as Sheffield Lab’s old direct-cuts, the little 1 Xpression Carbon sounded vivid, open and impressively ‘stable’.”
“The treble was brightly lit, but with no sign of brittleness or unnatural sheen.”
“Particularly impressive was the crisp and lifelike quality of the drum kit that was both explosive and delicate where appropriate, the cymbals possessed of lifelike splash and ‘ring’.”
“Pro-Ject’s motor unit is quiet and provides a stable drive and the excellent tonearm is satisfying to use, its lift/lower device operating smoothly.”
“Good hi-fi doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. The 1 Xpression Carbon is a cracking little package for the money.”
