“I lower the stylus onto a recording of Tchaikovsky’s Cossack Dance from Mazeppa played by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. This lively performance is both joyful and sprightly and the sound is delightfully realistic in my listening room, highlighting just how good a test this Telarc LP is for a full orchestra.”

Playing: Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass playing Our Day Will Come
“The trumpet consistently provides a real test for any cartridge and I’m pleased to note that it sounds well balanced and clear here. But what strikes me most is the timing and tempo, which are absolutely spot on. All of the musicians involved in this album are known for being at the top of their game and the Pro-Ject certainly does their performance proud.”

Playing: Barbra Streisand - I Don’t Break Easily
“The clarity of her voice is very good indeed…”

“The Classic is certainly a sophisticated turntable and its timeless elegance is brought right up to date by the carbon fibre construction of the tonearm. This arm matches well with the supplied Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge and sound-wise it turns in a great performance that’s particularly at home with vocals and jazz. All in all, The Classic is a perfect way to mark a 25th anniversary.”

Comments of Note:
"Released to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, the timeless, traditional look of The Classic hides plenty of up-to-date engineering aimed at making this two-speed turntable as plug-and-play as possible. The main chassis plate rests inside an elegant wooden frame on six elastomer balls that provide some measure of isolation, while the inner circumference of the precisely-machined 2.1kg aluminium platter is also damped with a similar material. The deck is pre-fitted with a hybrid carbon/alloy tonearm that offers the potential to unleash even greater potential with better pick-ups, and rounds off one of the most stylish, snappy-sounding and user-friendly vinyl sources around. A new classic is born!"

“The Classic served up a wealth of information and ordered it beautifully…”
“Vocalists were rendered with plenty of scale and located neatly to the fore of the action behind them.”
“The bass that was present, however, was beyond reproach in terms of detail, texture and pin-sharp timing.”
“rhythms were tracked with rail-like security ensuring the deck brought all kinds of songs to life with ease.”
“The Reggae-esque bassline underpinning The Wave Pictures’ ‘Red Cloud Road (Part A)’ from their EP Helen skipped along with an infectious gaiety but also with an impeccable level of detail around each note. This wasn’t just a bass guitar off in the background somewhere being idly strummed: it was right at the heart of the action and being played with conviction.”
“At the top end, The Classic package also turned in a highly capable performance.”
“By designing something positively affordable for its quarter-century, Pro-Ject has come up with a turntable that can hold its head high for the celebration.”
“The Classic is simply and neatly styled and turns in an excellent performance. There is plenty of scope to upgrade it further and I can see it winning many friends. Equally, I can’t wait to see what the company has up its sleeve in five years time for its 30th!”
