Debut Carbon The Original
The Debut Carbon The Original represents a return to the Debut roots of affordable hi-fi turntables that are constructed to hi-fi standards, with a pedigree to match. Capable of upgrades galore and featuring beautiful aesthetics, this turntable is the perfect first step into the world of serious vinyl listening.

The Debut story began in Austria in 1998, when Pro-Ject founder Heinz Lichtenegger and Laurence Armstrong, Managing Director of Henley Audio, set out to bring high-end sound within reach of a younger generation.

Pro-Ject product manager Jiri Kroutil turned the duo’s idea into a working sample by the following day, and the first Debut went on sale within months. The Debut Carbon landed in 2012, bringing a one-piece carbon-fibre tonearm to the series. Today, the Debut family has sold more than one million units — Debut Carbon The Original carries that legacy forward.

Finishes and Materials

The Original retains the pared-back shape that made Debut instantly recognisable, with three finishes: High Gloss Black, Satin Black and Real Wood Walnut. The plinth is CNC-machined from high-density MDF and built with a solid interior, giving the understated design a substantial foundation.

Precision Drive

The 1.7 kg steel platter sits on a glass-fibre-reinforced ABS sub-platter. A precision belt and aluminium pulley drive the platter, while a TPE motor suspension isolates vibration from the plinth. A DC/AC generator supplies the AC motor with a clean, controlled signal, helping maintain stable speed and quiet operation.

Tonearm and Cartridge

The tonearm’s tube and headshell are formed together as one piece, creating a direct, stable connection to the cartridge. A low-friction, CNC-milled aluminium bearing block supports accurate tracking, while an adaptive anti-skating mechanism adjusts across the record’s inner and outer grooves. The TPE-damped counterweight reduces arm and cartridge resonances by up to 50%.

The Pick it S2 MM cartridge is made by Ortofon and tuned by Pro-Ject, with an elliptical stylus that reads the groove precisely. The turntable is supplied with an acrylic dust cover, felt mat and phono optimised Connect it Phono E RCA cable. Each Debut Carbon The Original is hand-made in Europe.

  • Motor suspension belt keeps the motor mechanically isolated from the main plinth
  • Manual speed change between 33 and 45 RPM
  • Precision machined MDF plinth for reduced resonance transfer between components

  • Yes, it is possible for this turntable to be upgraded with a true balanced connection to a supporting Pro-Ject phono stage.*

For turntables with an RCA output, you can purchase one of our RCA > MiniXLR or RCA > XLR cables, depending on the phono stage you are connecting to.

For turntables with a MiniXLR output, you can run a MiniXLR > MiniXLR or MiniXLR > XLR cable, depending on the phono stage you are connecting to.

For turntables with a 5pin TAC output, you can purchase a 5P > MiniXLR or 5P > XLR cable.

For more information on the True Balanced Connection concept click here.

*True Balanced Connections always require a Moving Coil or specifically capable MM cartridge to be installed.
    * If your turntable features a metal platter you will need to change/upgrade this before using an MC cartridge, as the magnets within the cartridge will interact with the platter.

  • A phono stage takes the low-level electrical signal, generated by the pick-up cartridge on your turntable, and amplifies it to LINE level. When it's at LINE level, you can connect the outputs of your phono stage to any LINE or AUX input on your amplifier. If you do not have a phono stage, when you connect the turntable to your amplifier the signal will be very quiet, and if you turn it up to normal listening level it will sound distorted and noisy.

You do not need an external phono stage if...

    • There is a phono stage already built-in to your turntable (for instance with our Phono USB or RecordMaster turntables from Pro-Ject)
    • Your amplifier has a Phono input.

In both of these cases, the built-in phono stage needs to support your pick-up cartridge (see below).

  • Yes. You need to buy a phono stage that suits your particular type of cartridge. If you have a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge, you need an MM-compatible phono stage. If you have a Moving Coil (MC) cartridge, you need an MC-compatible phono stage. This is due to the different output levels of MM and MC cartridges (as MC cartridges are so quiet, they require more Gain).

  • Moving Coil (MC) cartridges generate an electrical signal by moving a tightly wound coil between two magnets. The movement is created by the cantilever, which houses the diamond stylus at its end and rides within the modulations of a record groove.

As opposed to Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges, MC designs are more difficult to produce - but often result in a more nuanced sound. For that reason, they are also often more expensive and boast better components than MM designs.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the powerful magnet inside, Moving Coil cartridges cannot be installed on turntables with magnetic (i.e. steel) platters.

For more on cartridge technology, read our informative article.

  • The Ortofon Moving Coil Cartridge Exchange Scheme is designed to help existing Ortofon customers update or renew their Moving Coil cartridge in a much more cost-effective way.

Through the scheme, Ortofon offer a trade-in value for the current range of moving coil cartridges, as well as an extensive list of discontinued models. Through this program, we are able to help customers upgrade, replace or slightly downgrade their current phono cartridge in a more economical way than usual.

  • The interconnect cable between a record player and a phono stage is prone to pick up noise on the way. That noise and interference can stem from a lot of unavoidable sources, such as household applicances, wi-fi and bluetooth devices, other power cables and audio amplifiers. Unshielded (i.e. RCA) interconnects can amplify the picked-up noise and make it audible through your speakers, interfering with the pure musical signal.

Balanced (typically XLR) cable connections double the wires carrying the musical signal – with one side inverted. In this case noise still gets picked up by both wires, but with one side reversed. When the signals are re-joined at the phono stage, the picked-up noise is cancelled out by the opposing signals. The benefit of this is a louder, cleaner musical signal that has doubled in size with almost no remaining noise.

  • Many of our turntables may have multiple compatible counterweights available. The counterweight you actually need is the one that allows you to balance your existing cartridge while ideally sitting near the tonearm bearing when fully installed.

If your counterweight sits right at the back of the tonearm, it runs the risk of introducing some micro-vibrations, so aiming for a counterweight where your cartridge weight is in the lower range of the supported weights is ideal.

To help you make the right decision, we've produced a comprehensive list of all our tonearms and counterweights.

  • Cartridge installation takes time and requires a level of understanding for the turntable/tonearm you are fitting to. We've put together some comprehensive advice and size guides, available here, which will help you through each step of the procedure.

However, if at any time you feel uncomfortable with the task at hand, be sure to contact us or your local retailer for assistance.
