The Essential III Digital is part of Pro-Ject Audio Systems' affordable turntable concept series. The Essential III FlexiRange allows you to pick exactly which turntable is right for your personal system, without wasting money on unnecessary features for your need.
All models in the FlexiRange are based on the standard Essential III turntable. From the high-quality, acoustically neutral, high-gloss MDF plinth and platter, through the premium bearing and decoupling feet, all the way onto the aluminium tonearm, Ortofon OM 10 cartridge and 9V asynchronous motor; the Essential III is a proven performer that’s more than justified its 5 Star rating from What Hi-Fi? magazine.
The Essential III Digital takes the Essential III design and adds the specially developed phono stage taken from the award-winning Essential II Digital turntable.
The Essential III Digital aims to be a turntable that can be connected straight out of the box to any modern hi-fi system. The integrated phono stage gives users the option between an analogue line level output or a switchable 24-bit/96kHz digital Optical output. The Optical output can be set at 48kHz or 96kHz and uses a high-quality Analogue-Digital Converter (ADC) to send a clean, uninterrupted signal to any digital hub (including a Sonos Playbar when set to 48kHz). So whether listening to music through a soundbar, an AV receiver, a DAC, a digital pre-amplifier or a multi-room system with different input options - the Essential III Digital should fit in flawlessly.
The added benefit of optical transmission is that you can run longer cables without the same signal loss you would experience with long RCA leads. So if you want your turntable to sit away from your amplifier while still sounding great and not using wireless technology, that's now possible!
The switchable analogue output uses a phono stage based upon Pro-Ject's iconic Phono Box design to deliver a brilliant performance from the fitted Ortofon cartridge. For when you're ready to upgrade your system, the whole phono stage can also be bypassed for connection to an upgraded external phono stage.
Like all models in the Essential III FlexiRange, the Essential III Digital is available in a high-gloss red, white or black finish.

Can I connect this to a Sonos Playbar?
The built-in switch for changing from 48kHz to 96kHz means the Essential III Digital can work with almost any digital receiver. When set to 48kHz we understand this will work with Sonos Playbar, yet we cannot offer support or guarantees for third-party products.
What is a Phono Stage?
A phono stage takes the low-level electrical signal, generated by the pick-up cartridge on your turntable, and amplifies it to LINE level. When it's at LINE level, you can connect the outputs of your phono stage to any LINE or AUX input on your amplifier. If you do not have a phono stage, when you connect the turntable to your amplifier the signal will be very quiet, and if you turn it up to normal listening level it will sound distorted and noisy.
You do not need an external phono stage if...
In both of these cases, the built-in phono stage needs to support your pick-up cartridge (see below).
Do I need a specific type of Phono Stage?
Yes. You need to buy a phono stage that suits your particular type of cartridge. If you have a Moving Magnet (MM) cartridge, you need an MM-compatible phono stage. If you have a Moving Coil (MC) cartridge, you need an MC-compatible phono stage. This is due to the different output levels of MM and MC cartridges (as MC cartridges are so quiet, they require more Gain).
